Esther Bertha Alice Shier (nee Folland)
1923 – 2013
It is with sadness that we are announcing the passing of Esther Bertha Alice Shier (nee Folland). She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 28, 2013. Esther was born on October 23, 1923 to Jacob and Josephine Folland. She had three brothers and one sister: Joseph, Melvin, George, and Marie. In 1942 she graduated from teacher's school and her first job was at Mont Nebo. She then taught at Falcon, Hegstrom, Creek Hill, Fort-a-la-Corne, Beatty and Spruce Home schools. She married Donald Shier in 1948. From this marriage two children were born; Leroy and Betty-Ann. She lived on the Folland farm after fire destroyed their home, where she stayed until she moved into The Jubilee Lodge. After a brief stay there, she moved to Mont St. Joseph's Care Home, until she passed away on March 28th. Leroy married Diane (MacGillivray) in 1970, and had two children, Trudy and Angie. Betty married Paul Braaten in 1973, and had two daughters; Kally and Karry. Esther also had 6 great grandchildren, Brianna, Zakk, Katrina, Faith, Hajner, and Noelle. She was predeceased by her parents Jacob and Josephine; her brothers Jacob (Phyllis) and Melvin (Susan), and her sister Marie (Malcolm) Fisher; as well as numerous relatives from both sides. She leaves to mourn her son Leroy (Diane) – children Trudy Shier (Keith) – (Brianna & Katrina Bear), Angie (Kelly) Taylor (Zakk, Faith, Hajner, Noelle). Betty (Paul) Braaten – children Kally (Robert) and Karry. Brother George (Avis) Folland – children Gary, June (Ray) Hawrish and Brenda.; as well as numerous family members from both Folland and Shier side. She will be missed but fondly remembered by her family, friends, and hundreds of students whose lives she has touched over her long teaching career. Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at Gray‘s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK with Deacon Eldon Danielson officiating. Interment will be held at Norden Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes memorial donations in her name can be made to the Mont St. Joseph’s Care Home, 777 – 28th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 8C2.
