In the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 2, 2013, at St. Paul’s Hospital, Joe Markling, 81, died peacefully in his loving wife’s arms surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Joe was born in Nobleville, SK on March 25, 1932 to Louis and Lena Markling. He was the second youngest of eleven children. He moved from Nobleville to Prince Albert with his parents at the age of 18. Joe worked in various jobs from logging with his brothers to a career as an electrician. He met the love of his life, Phyllis, and courted her for one year. They were married September 7, 1955 in Ridgedale, SK. They made their first home in Regina where Joe worked for the Provincial Government. Joe and Phyllis made many moves along the way to follow his work, from Regina to Duncan, BC to Humboldt, SK then finally settling in Prince Albert. In their 58 years of marriage they lived in 30 homes (26 by their 25th Anniversary). Joe was an active participant in the community with involvement in his church, Search for Christian Maturity, Independent Order of Foresters, Vintage Power Machines, and Prince Albert Optimist Club. Joe is survived by his lifelong wife and partner, Phyllis (Shields); his children and grandchildren Jerry (Aileen) – Melanie (Aaron), Jeremy (Clarissa), Justin; Dale (Mary-Lou) – Mike (Sara), Shea (Kristy), Landon; Bonnie (Terry) Wawro – Brenden (Ashley), Ryan, Ashley; Heather (Ken) Anderson – Jessica, Tyler, Larissa; Dave (Carol) – Lisa, Bobby, Josh, Matthew; his great grandchildren Logan, Jefferson, Carson, Kolbie, Alexis, Madden, Isla, Cooper, Fergus and Bria; his sisters Viola, Millie and Agnes; his sister-in-law Mae and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his parents Louis and Lena Markling; his parents-in-law Walter and Elsie Shields; his son Robert; his granddaughter Danielle; his brothers Tony (Eileen) and Louis; his sisters Lena, Marie (Al), Tina, Lee (Johnny) and Theresa; his brothers-in-law Len, Joe, and Vic and his godson Norris. Joe’s strength, love, loyalty and sense of humour were extended to everyone. He had such a positive influence that even the friends of his children and grandchildren referred to him as Dad and Grandpa. He loved playing cards, gardening and woodworking and sharing these with his family and friends. Joe’s family was his first priority. He was a very active participant in his children and grandchildren’s lives. He loved to attend all of their activities and was their greatest fan. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2013 at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 260 – 25th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Celebrant Reverend Father Roque Concepcion. Interment will be held at South Hill Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 54 – 11th Street East, Prince Albert, SK S6V 0Z9 or to a Charity of Donor’s Choice.
