It is with sadness we announce the passing of our dear father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, Andrew Alexander (Alex) Green, Friday, July 12, 2013 at St. Paul’s Personal Care Home, The Pas, Manitoba, age 89 years.
Alex was born Wednesday, June 4, 1924 at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, the eldest son of Arthur and Violet Green. He received his education at Queen Mary School and Prince Albert Collegiate. In 1941 Alex was employed as a Messenger with CN Telecommunications in P.A. and later became a Teletype & Morris Code Operator in Port Arthur, Ontario. In March 1942, Alex joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and trained as a pilot in Alberta. Discharged in 1945, he returned to his CNT job in Port Arthur. In May 1945, Alex transferred back home to Prince Albert where he met and married Wilma (Peggy) McKay on May 24, 1947. Alex and Peggy moved to The Pas in 1952 with their three young children, Malcolm, Barbara and Margaret Ann and spent the next 28 years enjoying life in The Pas. Alex worked as Wire Chief for CNT and pursued his love of farming by growing many acres of potatoes in the Carrot River Valley. His other passion was hunting and each fall enjoyed moose hunting with friends as well as Americans who relied on his expertise for a successful hunt. Alex also enjoyed family time at the cottage on Clearwater Lake.
Alex retired from CNT in 1979 and in the fall of 1980, Alex and Peggy relocated to Abbotsford, British Columbia for a short period of time before heading back to Prince Albert where they settled on an acreage and Alex took up his love of farming once again. This time it was a U-Pick Strawberry Farm. Those were some of his best years with more leisure time and he like nothing better than to join his friends at McDonald’s for coffee. His four-legged companion, Kip, a Border Collie, was always in the vehicle with him wherever he went.
Alex enjoyed spending time in his work shop on the acreage where he created beautiful pieces of oak furniture; built Purple Martin birdhouses and did some metal work. Alex always had a project or two on the go and was never idle.
Widowed in 2006, Alex sold his acreage and relocated briefly to Saskatoon into assisted living; returned to P.A. for a short time before settling into St. Paul’s Personal Care Home, The Pas in January 2012 where he was close to family and back to the town he dearly loved.
Alex is survived by 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. Son, Malcolm (Carrie) Green of Hudson, Florida; daughters, Barbara (Ron) Brezinski of The Pas, Manitoba, and Margaret Ann Green of Winnipeg, Manitoba; granddaughters, Lisa (Pat) Barry of The Pas (children Jordan and Luke), Krista (Jack) Szyszkowski (Simon, Sophia and Skylar), Michelle (Brent) Pickerl (children Emerson, Atticus and Arden) both of Calgary, Alberta; grandsons, Brenan (Christi) Brezinski (children Tessa and Remy); Kyle (Andrea) Brezinski (children Devin and Bentley) both of Brooks, Alberta; sisters, Muriel (Peter) Brindle of Lakefield, Ontario, Gladys Martyn of Prince Albert; brother, Stanley Green of Prince Albert; brother-in-law, Steve Medve of Prince Albert; sisiter-in-law, Barbara McKay of Abbotsford, British Columbia; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.S
