Edward Donald “Don” Wickens
November 17, 1921 – September 24, 2013
Edward “Don” Wickens, formerly of Prince Albert, died in Edmonton, AB on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the age of 91. Don was born on November 17, 1921 in Moose Jaw, SK to Alfred and Edna Wickens (Fraser). Don was employed with the Bank of Montreal following graduation. In 1942 Don enlisted in the RCAF and trained to become a navigator and the following year he was shipped overseas. Flying Officer Wickens was attached to the 434 Squadron and his crew flew 37 missions over enemy territory. As a result of his action on a mission in March of 1944, Don was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his courage, determination and high navigational skill. After completion of his military service Don rejoined the Bank of Montreal, where he spent the remainder of his career, and married Eileen (Ashton) in June of 1945. Don also believed in giving back to his community. This commitment was demonstrated through serving on numerous community boards, his dedication to athletic organizations, and as an Alderman for the City of Prince Albert from 1982 to 1986. Don is survived by his children Don(Margie) and their children Peter (Amanda) and Carly, Marilyn (Randy) Prodahl and their children Deann (Darryl) Plouffe and Jeff (Joanne), Bob (Faye) and their children Keith (Teen), Ryan (Pam), Terri (Paul) Pasieczka, and Carolyn (Dwayne) Fremont and their children Gord (Amber), Holly (Gavin) Hunter, Jamie (Taylor) Howard and step-grandchildren Tammy (Gord), Fran (Lynelle), Devin (Becky), Ginelle (Derek), their families and twenty-two great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; his brothers Jack (Mary) and Bob (Debbie). Don was predeceased by his wife Eileen (Ashton); his sisters Ellen Moore, Mary Peters, Margaret Taras and brother Rich as well as his parents and many comrades and friends. In lieu of other tributes the family is requesting that donations be made in Don's memory to the “Garden Project” at the Kipnes Center for Veterans, 4470 McCrae Ave NW, Edmonton, Alberta T5E 6M8. Interment will take place at South Hill Cemetery, enter from Marquis Road and 2nd Avenue entrance, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2013. Memorial Service and luncheon will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Royal Canadian Legion Hall, 133 – 8th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Mr. Wes Stubbs officiating.
Officers and Members of the Royal Canadian Legion will confer Veterans Honours. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray's Funeral Chapel, Drew Gray, Funeral Director.
