Laurence Ernest Hazelwood
August 18, 1924 – October 30, 2013
The family of Laurence Ernest Hazelwood announces with great sadness the passing of their husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather on Oct. 30, 2013 at Victoria Hospital after a short illness, in his 90th year. He is survived by his wife, Norma (Laing); daughter Barbara (Grant) Gustafson, and grandchildren Geoffrey (Amanda) Gustafson, Rebecca Gustafson, and Jennifer (Geoff) Henry, and great-granddaughter Taryn Henry; son Douglas (Carrie) Hazelwood and grandchildren, Emma, Grace, and Daniel Hazelwood; son Rodney Hazelwood, and grandchildren Sarra and Michael Hazelwood. As well, Laurence is survived by his sister, Irene Brown; sister-in-law Jody Hazelwood; brother-in-law John Weston; brother-in-law Calvin (Marion) Laing and sister-in-law Vilda Laing; plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Hazel (Campbell) Hazelwood; sister Pearl, and brother Neil. Laurence was born in August 1924 in Prince Albert and grew up in the Colleston area east of the city, where he attended school and worked on the farm. In 1953, he married Norma Laing of the Cut Knife area, who had attended teachers college with his sister, Pearl. They had nearly 60 years of health and happiness in their life on the farm, first in Colleston and then in the Stanleyville area. Beyond family, he found joy in farming, from turning fresh earth each spring to harvest in the fall, from the days of horse-drawn equipment through to using diesel-powered automated machinery. His work off the farm was as a carpenter, in addition to building and rebuilding family homes. He was a hard worker, a great teacher, and a neighbour who was always willing to help. Until recently when his health declined, he enjoyed tending to his horses and keeping up on what was happening on the family farm, as well as visiting with family and friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Gordon Surkan, and the staff of Victoria Hospital, for great care throughout his lifetime and especially in the past month. Funeral Service will be held Thursday November 7, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West Prince Albert, SK with Reverend Tony Thompson officiating. Interment will be held at Colleston United Church Cemetery. Those wishing to make a gift of remembrance are asked to support the Colleston Cemetery Co-operative, or a charity of their choice. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray's Funeral Chapel, Drew Gray, Funeral Director.
