Victor Hay
1925 – 2013
Victor was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 26, 1925 to Ruby Hay. He grew up on a farm in the Carrot River area with his grandparents. At the age of 15, Victor enlisted in the army; the recruiting officer had him say he was 19 and 6’1”tall. He served with many Canadian divisions as a signaler overseas in England, Sicily, Italy, North Africa, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Upon discharge Vic went into the restaurant business in BC, but not long afterwards returned to his first love – farming. After farming near Aldergrove he moved his family to a ranch near Kindersley in 1953. In 1959, Vic became part of a co-op farm, the Matador near Kyle until 1975. He retired to Saskatoon and kept very busy serving on numerous boards. Vic served on the boards of the Pioneer Co-op, the Federated Co-op and the Saskatoon Retail Co-op Board. While serving on the University Of Saskatchewan Board Of Governors and as the President of the Royal University Hospital Board he hosted the Queen when she cut the ribbon for the new addition. He was involved in organizing the Rural Library System for all of Saskatchewan and served as President of the Wheatland Regional Library Board. In 1984 he moved to Christopher Lake and served as village councillor and then Mayor for 15 years. He was in the colour party of the Legion, active in the church and choir at St. Christopher Church and the Seniors Club. Vic loved snowmobiling and fishing having a cabin by Roberts Lake. Music was a large part of Vic`s whole life he played violin, mandolin and guitar as a member of the Parkland Fiddlers and the Traveller`s Band at many celebrations and in church once a month. In 2011 he moved into Prince Albert joining the church family of St. David`s. Left to remember him with great affection is his wife Esther Hay (Watson); his granddaughters Susan Lewis (Ron) and Lee Eltom (Rick Waage); great grandchildren: Jorden and Sarah Lewis and Jaycee Waage; his step-children; Jan Watson, Brett (Mavis) Watson, Dana (Dean) Hoogland and Fraser Watson; his step-grandchildren: Brittany, Justine and Caitlin Mercier, Bob (Lindsay) Watson, Evan and Emma Hoogland; his step-great grandchildren: Carter and Gavin Watson; his son-in-law Barry Eltom (Iris Castle Woods) and brother-in-law Ralph Dowson. Vic was predeceased by his mother Ruby Swanson; his first wife Margaret Hay and his daughter Anne Eltom. We wish to express our sincere thanks to Dr. Surkan, Dr. Smith, Home and Palliative Care, the nurses and the EMT personnel; all who treated Vic with kindness and respect throughout his illness and especially his last day. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at St. David’s Anglican Church, 500- 24th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with The Reverend Norbert Haukenfrers officiating. Interment will be held at Christopher Lake in the spring. Those wishing to make memorials may do so to the St. David’s Church New Roof Fund or to the charity of your choice.
