SKIFTUN – On January 15, 2014 Mildred Engabord Skiftun (nee Larson) passed away at her home with her family by her side after a brief but courageous battle with a brain tumor. Mildred was born on October 9, 1933 in Brockington, Saskatchewan and was the eldest of 9 children of Helge and Gertrude Larson. On August 10, 1951 she married Lloyd Skiftun, the love of her life, in Melfort, Saskatchewan. Mildred and Lloyd took up residence in Brockington, Golden Prairie, Gull Lake and finally Prince Albert, where together they raised their family of five children and many foster children. She also enjoyed many years working at the Dairy Queen and Sears in Prince Albert. Some of the greatest joys in Mildred’s life were picnics, camping, berry picking, wiener roasts at the Little Red, family gatherings on the patio or going for coffee at A & W. Mildred loved knitting, cross stitching, oil painting and playing games on her ipad. The last 17 years of Mildred’s life was spent at Chester Court in Prince Albert. During this time Mildred was President of the Chester Court River Pals keeping very active and involved with the seniors. Mildred enjoyed spending her evening’s playing cards and bingo with her many friends in the building. Mildred was a very involved member of the Gateway Covenant Church in Prince Albert. Her faith grew over the years through her involvement with the church and its members. It was her tremendous faith that gave her such peace and serenity during her last days. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband, Lloyd; her four daughters, Debbie Skiftun, Tammie (Richard) Bussiere, Penny Overes and Terrie Sanderson (Tom Walker); sister-in-law, Charlotte Skiftun; foster daughter, Julie Beatty; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; two brothers, Eskil (Sharon) Larson and Dennis (Debra Holmes) Larson; three sisters, Annette Rees, Bev (Lloyd) Glass and Gail (Rea) Graham; sisters-in-law, Patricia (Carold) Larson and Antonia (Calvin) Larson; cousin, Viola Larson; numerous nieces and nephews and many extended family members that were near and dear to her heart. Mildred was predeceased by her parents, Helge and Gertrude; her son, Allen and brothers, Gary, Calvin and Carold. Mildred was a pillar of strength in the Larson/Skiftun families and there will be a forever void in our hearts. Mildred will be remembered for her quick wit, her great sense of humor and of course, her strong personality. Mildred will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered. Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2014 at the Gateway Covenant Church, 1500 – 15th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Pastors Seth and Stacia Michael officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to Prince Albert Palliative Home Care, Unit D, 4050 – 2nd Avenue West, Prince Albert, SK S6W 1A2.
