Lieut-Colonel Alvina Chapman
February 12, 1928 – May 24, 2014
Alvina was Promoted to Glory at the Herb Bassett Home, peacefully surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Selkirk, Manitoba to Robert and Opal Scott and lived there until her teen years when she moved with her family to Calgary. At the age of 18 Alvina followed God’s call to enter The Salvation Army’s training College in Toronto. Upon graduation she was appointed to The Salvation Army’s Grace Hospital in Calgary, where she pursued her nursing training. On April 5, 1951 she exchanged vows with her husband Robert “Bob” Chapman whom she had met at The Salvation Training College. Their officership took them too many appointments all across Canada and they ended their careers at The Salvation Army Territorial Headquarters in Toronto. Alvina excelled in women’s ministries, providing leadership and training to women all across the country. She was able to balance her career responsibilities with her family life and was a wonderful, fun-loving mother to her two beautiful children. She was much loved for her creative abilities and her kind gentle caring spirit. She and Bob were bereaved by the sad deaths of their 2 grandsons, aged 5 & 10 stricken with Malaria while on homeland furlough from Cameroon, Africa where they were missionaries. Eight years later they were further saddened when their son Bob and his wife Ruth were killed in an air accident off the Ivory Coast of Africa. Alvina will be lovingly remembered by her husband Bob; their daughter Carolyn (Dave); grandchildren Erin (Kevin) & Alexa & Kaya; Heather (Ryan) & Kiannah & Karson; Stephanie (Brann) & Christopher and her sister Geraldine. Special thanks to Drs. Ardells, Rye and the caring nurses and workers at the Herb Bassett Home. Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014 at the Salvation Army Church, 163 – 12th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Major Glenn S. Patey officiating. Interment will be held at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Salvation Army, 900 Central Avenue, Prince Albert, SK S6V 2H1.
