Vern Swenson, late of Birch Hills, SK, passed away on August 3, 2014 in Prince Albert, SK at the age of 80 years. Vern was born in Prince Albert, SK on August 27, 1933, the youngest of eight children. He began his schooling at Bastness School near Hagen, SK. His family later moved off the farm to Prince Albert where he continued his schooling. His choice of career was farming with his brother Stan. They were also both employed at Parkway Esso in Prince Albert for two winters. In 1955, he married Ruby Kerr of Carrot River, SK. They resided on the farm in the renovated Bastness School where they raised their children, Debbie and Dale. In 1983, Vern and Ruby moved to the town of Birch Hills, SK. It was around this time Vern and Stan, along with Ruby and Donna, owned and operated Swenson’s Appliance & Repair Service, the Laundromat, and the Sears outlet while continuing to farm with Stan, his son Dale and nephew Murray until approximately 1993. Vern and Ruby enjoyed their retirement which included traveling, golfing, curling, and many, many hockey games. Vern was involved with different organizations in the community, some of which were the Birch Hills Housing Authority, the senior hockey team and various church affairs. Vern’s greatest joys were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and the time spent with his many friends over a strong cup of coffee. Vern was predeceased by his parents Sevrin and Nora, his sisters Inez Nelson and Lillian Swenson, his brothers Leslie, Stan and Harvey, his granddaughter Dana Swenson, his brother-in-law Con Nelson and his sister-in-law Donna Swenson.
