Grace Rita Rempel (Adams)
1938 – 2014
Grace Rita Rempel (Adams) was the youngest of two children born to Syd and Dolly Adams (Bannerman) of MacDowall, SK on February 1, 1938. She went to school in MacDowall and this was followed by a hair dressing course in Prince Albert. This became a lifelong career for her although she did leave it for brief periods of time. She eventually had to stop cutting hair after breaking her wrist only a few years ago. She began her hair dressing career in Prince Albert. It was during this time that the first of two sons was born (Dale Adams, 21/01/55). It was also during this period that she met and married Edward Kormos of Holbein, SK. Her second son Jerry John Rempel was born on 30/3/61. Ed passed away suddenly on June 25, 1964. For the majority of this marriage she operated a hair dressing salon in Shellbrook. With the end of this relationship, she followed her brother to Outlook, SK and “set up shop” there. Soon after, she opened a second salon in Davidson, SK where she met Bill Rempel and they were married in December 1965. She became a step-mother in October 1970 when Bill assumed custody of three of his brother’s children (Ken, Tom and Wanda). Bill and Grace separated in 1975 and later divorced in 1989. Bill passed away on 31/01/2011. In the mid 70’s she left Davidson and for several years became more actively/directly involved in her family’s long term interest in the thoroughbred racing circuit both in Western Canada and the United States. Her father, Syd Adams had an extensive knowledge and interest in animals both wild and domesticated. Thoroughbred race horses and towards the end of his life, running sleigh dogs were a passion racing both all over Western Canada. His legacy continues to impact his family to this date. After spending several years in California and Phoenix with her then companion, Jim Scott she returned to Davidson as well as to her hair dressing career. It was during this period that Rupert Hodgins became a companion. He struggled with a number of health related issues and Grace cared for him until he passed away on July 16, 1995. During the latter stages of his illness she returned to MacDowall primarily to care for her aging parents. She eventually became a resident of the MacDowall Pioneer Lodge. During this time, Eugene Shewchuk became her companion. After several years of struggling with COPD Disease, she learned in March, 2014 that she had developed terminal lung cancer. She passed away on September 19, 2014 at the age of 76. Grace was predeceased by her parents, Syd and Dolly Adams; husbands Ed Kormos and Bill Rempel; sister-in-law Marie Adams (Bendle) and niece Jennifer Adams. Dale and Jerry wish to express their gratitude to Ed Bannerman, Lyle and Diane Bannerman, Betty-Anne Sinclair and Fern and Lionel Letendre for being there at the end.
