GILL, Clarence “Porky”
April 23, 1922 – October 7, 2014
Clarence Edmund (C.E.) “Porky” Gill passed away at Victoria Union Hospital in Prince Albert on October 7, 2014 at the age of 92.
Porky was born in Saskatoon on April 23, 1922 and attended Mayfair Public School and Saskatoon Tech Collegiate Institute. Porky loved sports and he and his brothers played many a game of hockey and soccer, which he especially excelled at.
Porky served during the war years from 1942 to 1945 in the Royal Canadian Navy. After the war, he took up the plumbing trade, for a time operating C.E. Gill Plumbing & Heating. He then worked at the Chemical Plant in Saskatoon and in 1966 moved his family to Prince Albert where he obtained employment as a plumbing instructor at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary, working there until his retirement in 1986.
Porky was a very social person and his greatest pleasures were found in spending time with his family and friends. The neighbor children on 27th Street played many a game of kick the can at the Gill Sunday barbeques. His cabin at Candle Lake, “Porky’s Palace”, was an active place and all were welcome to stop in for a visit and a beer. He played the steel guitar and loved a good dance. Porky had a great respect for the English language and his children learned early and often to speak properly. His handwriting was exquisite and even into his final years, his family received wonderfully written cards from him.
Porky was predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Gladys, in 2008; his parents, Minnie and Robert; his siblings, Percy, Bob and Jess; his first wife, Grace; grandson David McMurchy, and several of his wife’s family. He is survived and remembered by his five children, daughter, Gloria Bullerwell and her daughters, Tammy and Lisa and their children; son Wayne (Carol) and their three daughters, Carlee (Linden Smail) and their children, Jaiden and Kyla; Carynne (Mark Dean) and their son, Kale, Mel (Mark Williams) and their children, Kale, Quinn and Cara; son Robert (Beatrice) and their children Deanna (Igor Pohanka) and their daughter Ela, Brady (Nadine); daughter Gail (Herb Elliott) and their sons, Evan and Mark (Carly Almas) and daughter Cheryl (Tom Dobrowolski) and their children Amy and James. He is also survived by several nieces and a nephew and his wife’s family.
Porky faced some health challenges after his wife’s death, and the family is very grateful to the staff at Meals on Wheels, Victoria Union Hospital, Dr. Painter, and especially to Pat and the staff at Good Shepherd Villa for the compassionate care provided to him during his final years. Porky provided many memories for his family to share and he will be greatly missed. Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert, SK with Pastor Iris Kristjansdottir officiating. Private interment will be held at the Candle Lake Cemetery. Donations gratefully accepted to the Canadian Diabetes Association, PO Box 12013, Stn BRM B, Toronto, ON M7Y 2L3.
