Barry Collins Barry Collins February 16, 1936 – October 26, 2014 Barry Collins, B. Sc., JD, QC (Can), P.Geo., FGC, FEC(Hon.) passed away on October 26, 2014. He is survived by his wife Shirley (nee Musk), sons Christopher (Joy Neale), Patrick (Sarah James), daughter Mary (Lindsay Peterson), three grandchildren; Benjamin, Kyra, and Sophie, and his sister Carol (R.W. Burchill). He was predeceased by his parents Ian and Mildred Collins of Prince Albert and Christopher Lake SK and his sister Diana (Ron Rees). Barry was born and raised in Prince Albert SK, attending King George School and Prince Albert Collegiate Institute. Upon graduation he was a photographer for the Prince Albert Daily Herald before attending the University of Saskatchewan, obtaining first a Bachelor of Arts (Geology) then a Bachelor of Laws. Following admission to the Saskatchewan Bar in 1961, he began his legal career as a litigator in the Department of Justice at Ottawa. In 1974 he returned to Saskatchewan to establish and manage the Saskatchewan Regional Office of the Federal Department of Justice. He was given the honor of being designated a Queen’s Counsel by Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada in 1975. After 25 years in the public service he retired and took a year off, part of which was spent working in the bush with lifetime prospector George Findlay. He then started his own general law practice in Saskatoon.
In 1985 Barry began part-time prospecting in the La Ronge Gold Belt with Bill Ryan of Saskatoon. Things began to get serious when they found visible gold in a quartz vein, then a rare thing in Saskatchewan. They joined the Saskatoon Geology Section of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Barry served as CIM Program Chair for two years. Barry was also instrumental in revisions to the legislation which saw professional geoscience becoming a regulated profession in Saskatchewan. He served on the Act Revision Committee and, after seven years of arduous work, the legislation was amended. Following his service as a Councillor for the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan, Barry was appointed by APEGS as a Director of Geoscientists Canada, later becoming the President. It was during Barry’s tenure as President of Geoscientists Canada that a permanent office was created and a full-time Executive Director hired. As a result of Barry’s outstanding contributions to the geoscience profession, both in Saskatchewan and nationally,
Barry was honored with the title Fellow of Geoscientists of Canada and the designation FGC in 2013. Barry was an active member of the Saskatoon Cosmopolitan Club, the Cosmopolitan Couples Club of Saskatoon, the Companions of Good Cheer and Joel. Beyond his professional accomplishments and achievements, Barry pursued a wide range of interests including knife-making, cheese-making, bread-making, wine-making, duck hunting, woodworking. He approached these various activities with the same diligence that he brought to his professional life – he relished learning new things. Throughout his life, Barry had a passion for the forest and the north. From time spent with family on his parents’ property near Christopher Lake SK, to memorable prospecting trips in the far north, he was happiest when outdoors early in the morning. He will be sadly missed. At Barry’s request, there will be no funeral service. Friends and colleagues are invited to a reception in Barry’s memory at the Saskatoon Club from 2:30 pm – 5 pm on October 31, 2014. Memorial donations may be made to the Saskatoon SPCA. Condolences may be sent to mail@saskatoonfuneralhome.com Arrangements are entrusted to the SASKATOON FUNERAL HOME, (306) 244-5577.
