Ernest Fredrick "Ernie" Smith

Ernest Fredrick “Ernie” Smith passed away on Monday, November 10 at the age of 73 at Parkland Place in Melfort where he had resided since June of 2011. Ernie was born on October 25, 1941 in Dysart, SK to John and Emily Schmidt. He graduated high school in Dysart then moved to Regina where he began his life’s work with SGI on May 30, 1960. He married Joyce Ritter and they had two children, Colleen and Robin. After many years as an adjuster, part of which were spent in the Melfort area, Ernie started Smith Agencies in 1976. In 1980, he married Lynnda Clunie (Steele) and raised his step-children Rhonda and Ryan Clunie. Ernie was very community minded and served with numerous boards and groups including: school board, airport board, economic development and Kinsmen Club. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, family camping and spending time with friends and family at the cabin. He had a great interest in world and aviation history. His memory will be cherished by his wife Lynnda, daughter Colleen (Darren) Zurowski, son Robin Smith, daughter Rhonda Clunie and son Ryan (Jo-Anne) Clunie and his grandchildren Nathan and Megan Zurowski and Declan and Dane Clunie; his sisters Isabelle (John) Sali, Josephine (Lloyd) Zimmerman, Bernice Smith, and Margaret (Pat) Meehan; brothers Ralph (Sandy) Smith, Dan (Carol) Smith; sisters-in-law Bev Smith and Henrietta Smith; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Ernie was predeceased by his parents John and Emily Schmidt, sister Florence Gottfried, brothers John, Lawrence, George, Bill and Wilson Smith.
