BETTERTON, Hazel Luella was born October 21, 1926 on her parents (Sigurd and Lilly Lindskog) family farm in the Fairy Glen District. Her younger years were spent going to school in Fairy Glen, excelling in sports at school and working on her parents farm. In 1944, during the war, there was a shortage of teachers so she enrolled at the Saskatoon Normal School and began teaching in Margo, Saskatchewan. There she met Eldon Betterton and in 1946 after Eldon returned from the war, they were married. Hazel and Eldon raised their family of one daughter and three sons on their farm in the Kuroki district. In 1961, they sold their farm in Kuroki and moved to Fairy Glen. After moving to Melfort, she began employment in 1964 at the Parkland Regional Care Centre in the kitchen and eventually became supervisor of the laundry department. She retired from Parkland Regional Care Centre after twenty five years of service and enjoyed her retirement travelling with family and friends. Hazel was a Life Member of the Melfort Legion Branch #30 Ladies Auxiliary where she took part in all Remembrance Day Services and many Legion functions. She spent the last seven years as a resident at Parkland Place where she enjoyed the activities and visits from family and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Eldon, her sisters Viola, Helen, Gladys, and brothers Vernor and Sixten. She is survived by her son Lynn (Elaine) Betterton, her daughter Sharon Elmy, her son Brian (Cheryl) Betterton, her son Neil Betterton, 6 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Hazel passed away on December 21, 2014. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Friends so wishing may make memorial contributions to a Charity of one’s choice.
