Doris Balon passed away February 19, 2015 with family by her side, at the Lakeview Pioneer Lodge palliative care room in Wakaw, after a short illness, at the age of 88 years. Doris was born in the Lepine district on November 12, 1926. She worked very hard on her family farm. Doris married Bill Balon in 1948 and they farmed in the Tway area until their retirement in 1997, when they moved to an apartment in Prince Albert. Doris had a passionate love for the farm life. She continued lending a hand on the farm harrowing and combining every spring and fall until 2012. Even though she was not able to drive the equipment anymore, she frequently brought out treats and “Take Out” food to Roger and Cindy to help out with the meals. Doris had a great sense of humour and loved to tease and play practical jokes. April Fool’s day was great fun for her. She enjoyed having company, visiting and playing cards. She and Bill were very involved in the church, and up until a short time ago, she helped make perogies at the church she attended in Prince Albert. Doris was meticulous in whatever she did and raised her family to have the same values. In 2003, her husband Bill, son Richard and daughter Diane all succumbed to cancer within four months of each other. Doris’s strong faith and strength helped her through this terrible time. Doris has been very proud of her independence and was still able to drive to meet her “lady friends” for coffee once, sometimes twice a day. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Doris will be lovingly remembered by her son Roger (Cindy) Balon of Tway, SK., her daughter-in-law Lenna Balon of Calgary, AB., her grandchildren: Genele, Brandy, Lacey, Shari, and Kelly; her great grandchildren: Noah, Mackinley and Hunter; her sister Victoria (Stanley) Skibicki, her sisters-in-law: Elsie Olexyn, Sylvia Olexyn, Anne Balon, Eva Andrechuck and Frances Kushneryk; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Doris was predeceased by her parents George and Alexandra (Bayer) Olexyn, her husband Bill (June 7, 2003), her son Richard (March 29, 2003), her daughter Diane (April 25, 2003), and her brothers Peter Olexyn (February 9, 2001) and Alex Olexyn (September 3, 2013). A Prayer Service will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. Both Services will be held at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church at Lepine and officiated by the Rev. Fr. Patrick Powalinsky. Interment will follow in the St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery. Donations in memory of Doris may be directed to the St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, Lepine, SK. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Marc Blondeau of Kushneryk Funeral Service, Wakaw, SK., 306-233-4403.
