Ernie Stewart

It is with great sadness that the family of Ernie Stewart announces his passing on Monday March 23, 2015 in Prince Albert, at the age of 68. Ernie was born to Mary Charles in Montreal Lake on April 29, 1946. He attended the residential school in Prince Albert and Regina and later pursued a career as a journeyman carpenter. He was a councillor for Montreal Lake Band for 8 years and held a career as a housing inspector, from which he retired in 1993. He then sat on the Elder Committee until he became ill in 2008. Ernie married May on April 22, 1977 and they settled in Prince Albert. He enjoyed camping with his family and watching sports on T.V. He was known for telling stories and jokes. He liked playing cribbage and yahtzee. He was always willing to help anyone in need and would give someone his last dollar. Ernie loved his loyal dog “Precious”. In his final years, he enjoyed visiting family and friends and spoiling his grandchildren. Ernie is survived by his loving family: his wife May Stewart (nee Sorenson); his children Teresa Stewart, Richard Jr (Jan) Stewart, April (Marty Harrison) Stewart, Dustin (Sable Head) Stewart, Kerrie Stewart and Mary Stewart; his grandchildren David, Brayden, Richard III, Carly, Boden and Brooklyn; his sister Charlotte Stapleton, his mother-in-law Charlotte Sorenson; as well as nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by: his grandparents; his parents Mary Charles and Daniel Cook; his sisters Stella, Daisy and Caroline; his brothers Douglas and Allen; his father-in-law Sibert Sorenson. Special thanks to the staff who cared for him at the Herb Bassett Home as well as Chief Edward Henderson for his guidance and genuine compassion. Wake Service will be held at Little Red Reserve on Wednesday, March 25 and Thursday, March 26, 2015. Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, March 27, 2015 at Little Red Reserve. Interment will be held at Little Red Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations in Ernie’s name may be made to the Herb Bassett Home. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, (306-922-4729).
