Barbara Podhorodeski

It is with great sadness that the family of Barbara Ann Podhorodeski announces her sudden passing on April 26, 2015 at the age of 48, near Shipman, SK. Barbara was born June 5, 1966 to Keith and Judith (Rocheleau) Jones in London, Ontario. At the age of 12 she moved with her family to Sedley, Saskatchewan. She graduated from Sedley High School in 1984 with Honors. With IAEA, Barbara had the opportunity to travel to Queensland, Australia in 1985 and Ireland in 1986 working on farms and making lifelong friends. In 1990, she received her BA in Crop Science from the U of S with Honors. In 1988, Barbara married Edwin Podhorodeski and moved to Shipman, SK where she raised her sons. Chevlin was born in 1993, followed by Chase in 1995. She loved adventure, nature, and gardening, but most of all her boys. Barbara kept very busy in many services and social organizations. She was a Director on many producer boards like Sask. Canola Development Commission, Sask. Pulse Growers, Sask. Canary Board, Prairie Oat Growers Association, Conservation Learning Centre, as well as, Agriculture in The Classroom just to name a few. Barbara kept her boys busy in a lot of extracurricular activities like swimming lessons, figure skating, Ukrainian Dance, and Spruce Home 4-H Beef Club. She participated in many of her boys’ school activities. Her boys were always first and foremost. She was always proud of her boys’ accomplishments in school and in work. Barbara loved the north and trees. She planted 4 ½ miles of PFRA field shelterbelts and maintained them all. She was very passionate about farming from an early age. She also loved dancing, cooking, sewing, baking and gardening, Toastmasters, and walking with her cats and dogs. After her first year of University she work at the University with Dr. Al Slinkard at the Crop Development Center. She then worked for two summers for Hoechst (Agrevo, Bayer) in chemical research plots. In 1990, after she graduated from the U. of S., she spent her summer helping her husband on the farm before they embarked on a 5 ½ month journey thru Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii. She then worked for the PFRA in Melfort for a period of time prior to starting their family. Barbara loved to travel. She was in Australia twice, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, parts of Asia, a lot of Europe, India twice during her stint as a Director of the Sask. Pulse Growers, Mexico many times for holidays, and also for business while being a Director on the Oat Commission. Barbara is survived by: her husband Edwin and her sons Chevlin and Chase; her father Keith, her mother Judith; her brothers Melvin (Jody) and their children Zachary and Nicole, Scott (Theresa); her sister Margaret (Dave); her father-in-law Ed; her mother-in-law Mary; her sister-in-law Tania (Jim) and their children Brittany, Erin, Evan, Eric and Shantaya. She was predeceased by: her infant sister Elaine; her grandparents Merla and Morley Jones, Opal and Ed Roucheleau, John and Nellie Stanowich, as well as Felix and “Baba”Anna Podhorodeski. A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 2 at Crossroads Pentecostal Assembly, 1510 Olive Diefenbaker Drive, Prince Albert.
