Hazel Canaday

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, Hazel May Canaday.
Hazel was born at home in Ardath, Saskatchewan, to Wilfred and Ruby Vincent on May 17, 1928.
The family moved to the Rozilee District in 1934 where she attended public school and then completed High School in Shellbrook. She attended Normal School (Teachers College) in Saskatoon and began teaching in February, 1947, at Silent Call. Mom taught for over thirty years in Shellbrook. She developed enduring friendships with many colleagues, especially her dear friend, Rhonda Sommerfeld.
Hazel married the love of her life, Bill Canaday, on July 7, 1950. Bill and Hazel had three children; Janet Mackie (Phil), Lois Grendahl (Rob Galloway), and Boyd Canaday (Shari). Grandchildren include, Erin Zatylny (Joe), Travis Mackie (Brittany Williams), Leam Grendahl (Lindsey Toms), Brynna Grendahl, Brendon Canaday (Courtney Belair) and Dorin Canaday. Great-grandchildren are Shai and Kaylan Mackie, and Mya and Sara Zatylny. Hazel was predeceased by her husband Bill; her parents Wilfred and Ruby Vincent; her in-laws Joe and Marcella Canaday, her sister Marjorie and brother-in-law Bob Miller.
Mom loved her family dearly. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mom was a well-loved and respected teacher in the Shellbrook Community. She enjoyed her last years at the Parkland Integrated Health Facility where the family heard many stories of her sense of humour and her energetic nature. She took part in and enjoyed many activities, especially singing and painting. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. In lieu of tributes, memorial donations may be made in memory of Hazel to a charity of the donor’s choice. A private family service will be held at a later date.
