Mike Shkwarok

Mike Shkwarok, age 95, of Prince Albert, SK passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2016. He was born on June 7, 1920 in the Dundurn District. During the times of 1922-1931 he moved to Alvina, SK to help his parents on family farm. In 1931 the family moved to Wood Hills in the Shell Lake area and Mike continued helping his parents on farm. At age 15 he left to work around the Krydor, SK area helping farmers until he was called to serve in the army on December 4, 1941. He was sent to Regina, then Moose Jaw then to Terrace BC because of the war in the Aleutian Islands. Although he didn’t serve directly due to a hearing impairment he served in other areas. He was sent to Regina, then to Borden, ON and discharged when the war ended in 1945. He then went farming in Shell Lake, SK and continued until 1978 when he moved to Nordale, SK (Prince Albert area) with his mother. He lived in Nordale until 2003 at which time he and Anne took an apartment together in Prince Albert, SK. After Anne’s passing, Mike stayed in the apartment enjoying his time having coffee with his coffee buddies at Smitty’s and socializing with Anne’s family until his health began to deteriorate at which time he required assisted living. He was moved to Nelson Care home and then to Herb Bassett Home for the last few months as his health worsened. Many thanks to the staff of the Nelson Care Home for their kind care, and also to the Herb Bassett Home staff. Mike is survived by one niece Mariene and one nephew Michael. He was predeceased by his parents Martin Shkwarok in 1968 and his mother Josephine Shkwarok (Moskwa) in 1996; his older brother Joe Shkwarok died in the war in 1943; his companion Anne Lukowich in 2011 and his sister Mary Richards (Shkwarok) on May 21, 2015. Mike was a kind and caring man with many friends – he will be dearly missed. Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 10 from River Park Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, April 11 from St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 752 – 14 Street West by Reverend Father Vasyl Kravchuk. Interment will take place in the South Hill Cemetery. It is the family’s request that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Donald M. Moriarty, Funeral Director.
