Marie Theresa Scott (nee: Durocher) passed away peacefully with her children by her side on April 7th, 2016 at Victoria Union Hospital in Prince Albert, SK at the age of 84 years. Theresa was born on October 24th, 1931 at Beauval, Saskatchewan to Elizabeth and George Durocher. She was a wonderful birthday present to her beloved mother because they shared the same birthday. She attended the Beauval Residential School and unlike many stories about life in a residential school, she always spoke fondly of her time there. Later she lived with her Aunt Angeline Aubichon and her husband (“The Norwegian” as she referred to him) on a ranch situated along the beautiful Beaver River. There she learned farming and domestic skills like milking the cows, gardening and preserving fruits, berries and vegetables. It must have been here where she acquired her great love of nature. She often told the story of bridling her little brown horse and going to get the cows for milking in the pasture where she had to cross a small creek. When they came upon the creek she would brace herself by hanging on the horse’s mane and clicking her tongue and the horse would jump over the creek! As a young woman, Theresa worked in Buffalo Narrows doing housekeeping for a Chinese boarding house. She then moved to Ile—a-la-Crosse and was hired by the nuns as a cook in the convent. From there she went to Dore Lake where she worked for Harry Husak cooking for the mink ranch crew. Many years later she would take her family back to Dore Lake one summer for a visit where Harry greeted her and her family with open arms and was very happy to see her again. Her adventurous spirit then led her to Hoey, Saskatchewan, a small farming community south of Prince Albert where she found employment as a housekeeper for a farming operation there. In 1957 she met Charlie Scott. Together they lived in various locations such as Mattes, Canwood, Polworth and eventually settling on their very own farm in Erinferry in 1972. Theresa was very happy performing her many chores that sustained her large family. This life was not an easy one as she did it without the many luxuries and amenities we are accustomed to today, but the home she ran always functioned seamlessly with delicious meals, a warm fire burning, clean clothing and made up beds…a haven to her family. She also performed many of the outside chores on top of all this such as milking cows, chopping wood, feeding the cows, pigs and chickens and tending to her huge garden.
In her final years Theresa lived in Debden at the Debden Heritage Manor where she was well cared for and close to all of her children and friends. There, she enjoyed seeing the other residents and staff everyday, going out for a smoke, and getting the Shellbrook Chronicle every Friday. Many of the staff have shared stories about her kindness, her welcoming smile and the question “You going to work again tomorrow?”. Theresa was a woman of very few words…a humble soul with a heart of gold. She always took pride of her appearance but was not a prideful person. She believed in hard work, duty and diligence and treated everyone she met with with kindness and respect. The world could certainly use more people like her. Alas, the world is indeed a lesser place with her passing, and we feel as if a hole is left where something beautiful once was. Let us take comfort in knowing that her spirit will live on in the hearts of all those who held her dear. She leaves to mourn: Her children: Liz Bird, Lucille Scott, Randy Scott, Barbara (Neil) Tisserand, Brenda (Leonard) LePage, Sharon (Len) Collins, David (Leah) Scott, Allen (Collette) Scott. Her grandchildren: LeeAnn, Alister, Claude, Arlene, Scott, Lindsay, Amanda, Matthew, Christopher, Jennifer, Hailey, Sarah, Kezia, Isabel and Micha. Her great grandchildren: Serenity, Darius, Saphira, Parker & Madalynn. She was predeceased by her Husband Charlie Scott, A daughter Linda Ann, Her father George Durocher, her mother Elizabeth Bouvier. Her brothers Louis, Eugene and Paul Durocher, Her sisters Antoinette, Louise and Marie Durocher. Theresa’s Funeral Mass was held on Monday, April 11, 2016 at St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic Church in Debden, SK and was officiated by Father Tuan Doan, who did such a beautiful service. Internment and final resting place was in the Park Valley Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Debden Heritage Manor, Debden, SK. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of Beau “Lac” Funeral Home.
