It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our dear sister, Carla Ann Nelson-Solowan, in Saskatoon, April 3rd, 2016, at the age of 35. Carla was born on May 10, 1980, in Prince Albert, SK. A few months later, she was adopted by Rick and Annie Solowan, and became our sister. Carla grew up in Prince Albert and attended Vickers School and Carlton Comprehensive High School. Carla wrote amazing stories as a child, and was a talented piano player. Carla was a very humble person. She was the most kind soul, she was always happy and friendly, and would give you the shirt off her back. She loved with her whole heart. Carla was very much loved by her family and friends. Carla fought a good fight, she struggled so much over her short lifetime. At the end, she was able to tell everyone she loved what she needed to say, and she left forgiven, and with a clear conscience. She knew it was time to go. She was tired of the pain, and she was eager to meet Mom and Grandma again. She passed while family held her hands and told her she was loved.
Carla is survived by her two children: Kayzia and Bradly Nelson, her sisters Leah Dorion (Solowan) and Angela Solowan, brothers Tyler Solowan and James Dorion, her nieces Dakota, Erica, Drewanna, and Mackenna Solowan, family friends Candice and Brian Davis, as well as many special aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, and her Nelson family.
She was predeceased by her grandmother Irene Golding, mother Annie Solowan, father Rick Solowan, cousin Sheldon Smith, uncle John Golding, biological mother Elaine Nelson, and the love of her life, Gordy McCarthy.
Special thanks to staff at RUH and SPH who provided such great care for her in the last 2 years, especially the Compassionate Care team who treated her with respect and dignity which sadly, is something that addicts don’t get often. Thanks also to everyone to worked with her and tried to help her get her life together. And to Dr. Markentin who she said is “a good kid”, we thank you too.
Memorial and internment will follow at a later date.
Instead of donations, we ask that you do something kind for someone. Especially if they are struggling. Let Carla’s kindness live on.
