Edna (Nan) Muriel Gordon (nee Forsythe)

It is with great sadness that we announce, at the age of 96, the passing of Edna Gordon on April 14, 2016.  Mom was born on November 10, 1919, in Moose Jaw, SK to Janet and Robert Forsythe.  During her formative years she attended primary school at the Eastleigh Country School and later moved into Moose Jaw to attend the Moose Jaw Technical School and nurses training at the Moose Jaw General Hospital. In 1941, having received her certificate as a Registered Nurse, she moved to Birch Hills to nurse and make her home.  Her career spanned over three decades working in the communities of Birch Hills, Melfort and Prince Albert. During her time in Birch Hills, she met the love of her life, Alex.  They were married in 1943 and together raised a family of three.  During the earlier years they worked hard to provide for their family through the farm and her nursing career.  Their home was always open to friends and family, whether it be for a hot meal or just a visit.  They also spent a considerable amount of time at the cabin at Candle Lake or on fishing excursions throughout the province.  Even after Alex’s death in 1988, Edna would spend the summers at the “best holiday spot in the world”.  Until the age of 90 she made the yearly trek to the lake where she would reside from May to October.  Even when this became more difficult she would regularly go to the cabin with family members.  Edna never missed an opportunity to read a book, “appreciate the view” or display her fishing skills.  Nan often reminisced about her days as a young girl where she enjoyed swimming, softball, speed skating and her biggest love, riding horses.  Having lived through the thirties she developed a keen ability to make use of everything, waste nothing, provide for everyone and be creative.  This was never more evident than in the creations and heirlooms that she would crochet or knit for family, friends, the church or the less fortunate.  Edna will always be remembered for her quick wit, direct honesty, mischievous smile and ability to know when it was “10 to” the hour. She is survived by her two daughters,  a son and their families; Muriel (Lyle) Sundbo and their family: Darren (Paula) Sundbo and their children Evan (Kelsey Menzler) and Kennedi, Darla (Dan) Parent and Jaycie (Ben Ritz); Bob (Bernice) Gordon and their families: Lou (Claudia) and Zack Gordon, Jackie Gordon, Chris Gordon, Stuart Boylan, Nicole (Tasuku) Takeushi and their children Asaka, Matias and Lucas; Gail (Doug) Hope and their family: Jason (Penny) Hope and their children Jordyn and Jaxsen, Hailey (Kirk) Keddie and their children Asia, Sydney and Kaiden; sisters in law; Florence Forsythe and Marg Schreifels, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Edna was predeceased by her husband, Alex, parents: Robert and Janet Forsythe, granddaughter Lisa Sundbo, daughter in law Darlene Gordon, as well as her siblings and in laws: Berta and Ken Ayerst,  George and Ila Forsythe, Howard and Phyllis Gordon, Ellen Zachow, Ed Zachow, Bud Schreifels, Donald Gordon and nephew Jim Gordon. The family would like to thank the staff at the Weldon Country Villa and level 4 Surgical Unit at the Victoria Hospital for their care and compassion. A special thank-you to Edmund and Sandra Royeppen for their friendship through the years and in particular the last few weeks.   Funeral Service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at the Birch Hills Lutheran Church, Birch Hills, SK with Reverend Duane Mohn officiating.
