1917 – 2016
Nellie Chopyk passed away peacefully in the early morning of May 10, 2016, at the Victoria Hospital. Nellie leaves to mourn her passing her two sons, Peter, and his children, Terri and Tammy; and Gerald (Ethel) and their children, Steven (Tracy), April (Greg) Holman, and their son, Easton; her sister, Pauline Bishko; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Nellie was predeceased by her husband, Fred; her parents, Frank and Maggie Zychowka; her brothers, Joe, Paul, John and Peter, and their spouses; her sisters, Mary, Rose and Jennie, and their spouses; and her daughter-in-law, Rita Chopyk. Born and raised near Janow Corners, Nellie spent her early years on the family farm until she married Fred. Fred and Nellie raised two children on the farm where she worked hard providing for her family. She enjoyed her garden and in her spare time would cross-stitch, knit or crochet. She made wonderful friends with her neighbors. She later moved to Prince Albert, where she worked at the Lions Home Laundry in addition to providing housekeeping for several families. She really enjoyed meeting other seniors at the Heritage Centre where she excelled at shuffleboard and carpet bowling. Nellie loved living at Carment Court where she made many friends. She did everything herself and enjoyed the shuffleboard competitions, working on the jigsaw puzzles, and playing bingo on Monday nights with her granddaughter, April. She loved spending time with family and friends, playing cards, crib and aggravation (marbles), and of course, waiting for the “goodbye” on the intercom. Many Sundays were spent visiting her sister and brother-in-law in Meath Park. Due to failing health, she moved to Nelson’s Care Home in 2012, where she spent a lot of time doing jigsaw puzzles, listening to entertainment and visiting. Her days brightened whenever her great-grandson, Easton, came to visit and ride her walker. A Celebration of Nellie’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2016, at River Park Memorial Chapel, Reverend Nora Vedress officiating. Interment to follow at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to River Park Memorial Chapel, 306-764-2727, Paula Hanson, Funeral Director.
