Mrs. Edith Florence Marlowe beloved wife of Keith passed away at the Rose Villa, Rosetown, SK. on May 8, 2016, at the age of 80.
Edith was born on December 25, 1935 in Melfort, SK. to Jane and Albert Phillips. She was the youngest child and had two older brothers Bill and Bob. Edith met Keith through her brother Bill in 1952 when Keith went to board at Jane and Albert’s. Bill and Keith had chummed together in Prince Albert and had worked together in Uranium City for National Resources. Edith was 15 at the time they met and Keith was 17. Apparently it was not love at first sight but I am thinking it wasn’t too long before Cupid’s arrow hit both Keith and Edith. After high school Edith went to Business College in P.A.
They were married on Friday the 13th of January 1956 and the minister asked them if they were sure they wanted to get married on Friday the 13th. They were sure and as it turns out it was a very lucky day as they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.
Mom and Dad moved to Rosetown in 1966 and while Edith stayed home with the kids, Keith began his career with the Dept. of Highways. On May 21, 1969 tragedy struck the family as Lee drowned in the Rosetown swimming pool. This was devastating to the entire family.
Edith worked at various places in Rosetown such as Stedmans and restaurants such as the Dog n’ Suds, Gulf and ran the concession at the rink and at the pool. She was known for her very large and delicious cinnamon buns.
Keith retired from the Dept. of Highways on January 1, 1987 and they decided to hit the road with the High Arctic Fish Truck. Together they travelled all across Western Canada. During that time she also kept busy by knitting baby blankets for babies born in the Rosetown Hospital. Not only Rosetown babies received her blankets but also any baby she crossed paths with on the road. So it would be hard to determine how many baby blankets she made but we would think it is in the hundreds.
Volunteering came natural to both Edith and Keith and the residents of the town of Rosetown benefitted greatly from the many hours they volunteered.
Edith was involved in the Royal Purple and served as District Deputy. She was a Master bowler and spent many hours teaching new bowlers. She was a volunteer driver and drove many people to doctor appointments and downtown to shop and get the mail. She was very involved in the church and loved attending services at this church. One of her greatest pleasures was her involvement in Special Olympics. We all know this was because of her special love for her granddaughter Bree.
Mom and Dad also ran the fruit truck in Rosetown and the last summer was 2006. Every time you passed by you would be sure Edith would either be laughing and enjoying a conversation with someone or she would have her nose in a book.
I think Mom’s greatest gift to her family was her love that she had for them. She loved each one in different ways. She prayed for each one and always was concerned for their well-being. She would give them the last cent in her bank account if that is what she thought they needed and often did without so she could help others. It was just the way she was.
Edith is survived by her husband Keith of 60 years; daughter – Lorraine (Dennis) High of Joussard, AB.; children Patrick (Melissa) and Sandra (Len); son – Brian (Susan) Marlowe of Vermilion, AB.; children Taylor, Samantha (Waylon) and Catherine (Shawn); son – Dean (Shelly) Marlowe of Churchbridge, SK.; children Jennifer and Adam; daughter – Janet Phillips of Saskatoon, SK.; children Rick (Tammy) and Bree (special friend Chris); son – Wes (special friend Dawn) of Saskatoon, SK.; children Samm (Michelle) and Candice (Dillon); brothers – Bill (June) Phillips of Alder Grove, B.C. and Bob (Tony) Phillips of Nelson, B.C.; sister-in-law – Nora and Paul Gambling of Yuma, USA; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by: son Lee Allen Marlowe; parents Jane and Albert Phillips; mother and father-in-law – Gwyneth and Neil Marlowe; brother and sister-in-law – George and Ester Marlowe; and sister and brother-in-law – Pat and Orland Dimick.
Keith and family appreciate the many kindnesses both in thought and in deed that we have received. Mom will be greatly missed by all of us.
