Bernadette Marie (Savard) Durette was born on February 22, 1928 in Victoire, Saskatchewan. She passed away on August 21, 2016 at Whispering Pine Place in Canwood. Mom grew up on the shores of Savard Lake with her parents Thomas and Blanche Savard along with her six sisters and one brother. We loved to hear stories of her childhood adventures. She graduated from Debden High School in 1947 and received the Governor General Medal for her high average. After school she went to work in New Westminster, B.C. In 1950, she married Maurice Durette and they started their lives together on their humble farm two miles north of Debden. This is where they raised their eight children and taught each of them the value of hard work. Mom ran the home, which included planting a big garden and preparing food for the winter. She did all this while helping Dad with the farming wherever her help was needed. She became well known for her excellent cooking and baking skills. The grandchildren loved to visit, knowing there would always be treats. When the children had left home and the farm became too much work for them, Mom and Dad retired in Debden. Mom continued to plant a large garden in town, even with her health challenges. She took great pride in her flowers and fruit trees. In October 2011, Mom moved to the Debden Heritage Manor where she enjoyed the company and received the care that she now needed. In 2013, she became a resident at Whispering Pine Place in Canwood.
