It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Walter Chubey, at the age of 81 on April 2, 2017, with family by his side after a short courageous battle with cancer.

Walter was born in Grandview, MB on May 22, 1935 to Mike and Molly Chubey. Growing up, Walter worked on the family farm until he left the farm to go logging with his brother Tony. Walter then went to work for Pasareno Construction in Grandview, MB. Walter married the love of his life, Olive. They were married in 1961 in Grandview, MB and were married for 55 years.

Walter and Olive had five children whom he adored; Gaylene, Grant, Darwin, Shannon, and Curtis. Walter worked hard all his life and worked away from home a lot. It was always hard on him leaving his family behind. Walter then moved his family to Prince Albert in 1975 to continue working for Brent Construction. He retired in 2002 from North American Rock and Dirt after working in the construction industry for more than 40 years. Walter enjoyed gardening and working on his tractors. His greatest love though was his visits with his kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Olive Chubey (née Yurkiw), daughter Gaylene (Terry) Sproull, son Grant ( Charlise) Chubey, son Darwin (Myrna) Chubey, daughter Shannon (Laurie) Tasa, and son Curtis (Merredy) Chubey; grandchildren Courtney (Eldon) Holinaty, Cody Chubey (Danielle), Devon (Ali) Chubey, Jordan Chubey (Rosita), Tanner Chubey, Matthew Lazaruk, Madison Chubey, Samantha Rousson, Sarah Rousson (Colten), Conner Chubey, and Brooke Chubey; great-grandchildren Elissa, Jaxon, Harley, Cylas, Quinn, Daysha, Chance, Kloe, and Jayda. Walter is also survived by his sisters Helen Lukey and Rose Huska, brothers John (Leta) Chubey, Peter Chubey and Tom Chubey; sisters-in-law Shirley (Oliver) Lyons and Morlene (Garry) Kiwaluk; brothers-in-law Brian (Joanne) Yurkiw and Brent (Carol) Yurkiw.

Walter was predeceased by his parents Mike and Molly Chubey, brother Tony Chubey, sister Anne Chubey, father-in-law John Yurkiw and mother-in-law Nellie Yurkiw, brothers-in-law Steve Lukey and Bill Huska, and sister-in-law Florence Chubey.

A Prayer Service will take place at Gray’s Funeral Chapel (575 28 Street West, Prince Albert, SK) on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Divine Liturgy will be held at St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church (751 – 14th Street West, Prince Albert, SK) on Friday, April 7, 2017 at 11:00 am. An interment will follow at South Hill Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the St. Paul’s Hospital Palliative Care Unit (1702 20 Street West, Saskatoon, SK, S7M 0Z9).
