Wiesblatt’s older bro gets the better of their first WHL matchup

The Prince Albert Raiders’ five-game winning streak came to an end on Wednesday in Calgary, and a Wiesblatt is very much to blame.

No, not Raiders sophomore forward Ozzy Wiesblatt, but rather his older brother. Orca Wiesblatt scored two third period goals, including the game-winner, as his Calgary Hitmen defeated the Raiders 4-2. It was the first time the Wiesblatt brothers ever matched up against each other in a WHL game.

The Hitmen snap a three-game losing streak to improve to 9-5-1 on the season.

The Raiders had a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes with goals from Spencer Moe and Evan Herman. For Moe, he’s easily the hottest Raider the moment as he’s scored six goals during a four-game goal scoring streak. He also already has eight goals on the season, and is now just one goal away from his career high.

But in the third, the killer whale took over.

Orca Wiesblatt scored on a turnover, after an Aliaksei Protas pass was deflected behind the Raider defence and Orca found it for a clear breakaway to tie the game at 2-2.

With just 1:22 remaining in the game, the older Wiesblatt struck again by potting home the game winner off a rebound.

Hitmen defenceman Egor Zamula ended the game late with an empty net goal.

For the Raiders, that’s their first loss since Oct. 23 when they were dropped 4-3 by the Portland Winterhawks. This is also the only regulation loss the Raiders have suffered against a team in the WHL Eastern Conference, as their previous two regulation defeats were on their U.S. division road trip.

Coolman Luke

Before the game, a familiar man for both teams sauntered to centre ice to drop the ceremonial puck. It was Luke Coleman, who started his career with the Raiders from 2014-17, before getting moved over the Hitmen, where he played his final 174 WHL career games. Coleman is now playing his first year of USports hockey with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
