École Vickers School hosts annual Remembrance Day ceremony

On Tuesday morning, students, staff and members of the community gathered at École Vickers School and took the time to remember those who dedicated their lives for Canada’s freedom.

Those who attended the school’s annual Remembrance Day assembly observed a moment of silence and heard a reading of In Flanders Fields. The school’s choir and band both also featured prominently. Teacher Perry Acorn said the school’s students took the lead in putting the assembly together.

“We had students in charge of all the speaking, students in charge of artwork, students in charge of music, students in charge of looking after our legion member guests,” he said.

Acorn said providing the school’s students the ability to take the lead in putting on the assembly gives them another important chance to learn.

At this year’s ceremony students as well got the chance to take in a video about the start of Canada’s campaign to liberate Sicily from the Germans.

Members from the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 2 in Prince Albert were on hand to provide the colour guard for the ceremonies. Gary Renaud was one of the members of the guard, he said the legion members appreciate the chance to get out into the community.

“We’re proud to go to the schools the week of November 11 to help them out with their programs for November 11 and meet the young ones,” he said.

Renaud said the time of year can be a busy one for the legion’s colour guard as they try to make it to as many school events as they can. Renaud had high praise for the ceremony put on by École Vickers School Tuesday, calling it fantastic and said they were happy to take part.

“We’re just proud to do our part for November 11,” he said.
