Raiders fall to Silvertips in overtime thriller

A dramatic late-game goal from Ozzy Wiesblatt wasn’t enough to lead the Prince Albert Raiders to victory, as the team fell 2-1 in overtime to the Everett Silvertips on Saturday night.

Down 1-0 late in the third period with goaltender Boston Bilous on the bench for the extra attacker, the Raiders’ 31^st shot directed at ‘Tips goaltender Dustin Wolf was the first to find the back of the net. A beautiful cross-ice feed from Aliaksei Protas found the stick of Ozzy Wiesblatt who one-timed it home to tie the game at 1-1 and send a game that looked like a loss to overtime.

In overtime, the Raiders ran out of late-game magic as Everett forward Michal Gut found the back of the net 1:38 into the extra frame to give the Silvertips the victory.

Prince Albert seemed to get stronger as the game went along, and Everett was up to the challenge from start to finish as the rested but potentially rusty took on a Silvertips team playing their third game in four nights.

“I thought we started a little slow and that was to kind of to be expected after the long bus ride. This was their third game this week and our first, so we had to get our legs underneath us, but overall you know I thought we played well,” assistant coach Dan Gendur said postgame.

“It’s a one-goal game, we score late, tie it up, still get a single point.”

The first goal of the contest came 3:45 into the third period when Gage Goncalves found a rebound at the side of the Raider net after a point shot hit a defenceman in front. He knocked it home before Bilous could track it, giving the home team a lead that looked like it would hold up late in the game.

Wolf held strong in the Everett net until the waning seconds, robbing Wiesblatt point blank before allowing the lone blemish of the evening.

“We were composed, the guys were confident when we called the time out [with just over a minute to play], knew what their assignments were. Obviously a great play by Alex there to find Ozzy across the ice,” Gendur said.

Saturday night’s game had an interesting wrinkle to it as Raider forward Reece Vitelli made his debut against his former team, while former Raider Cole Fonstad met his old club for the first time after the two were involved in a trade on Sunday.

In what was a difficult game with only two practices with the Raiders before facing his ex-teammates, Vitelli showed well in his new colours.

“He came as advertised, he’s got great wheels. It’s going to take him a little bit of time just because we do play a little bit of a different style than Everett. He’ll get adjusted through this trip,” Gendur said.

Now with a record of 7-0-3 through 10 games, the Raiders will carry on to Kent, WA for Tuesday night’s game against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
