The TSN/Kraft Celebration Tour is getting ready for the Prince Albert event on Wednesday at the Kinsmen Water Park, but first they wanted to see what the city had to offer.

At the boat launch on Tuesday TSN SPORTSCENTRE anchors Darren Dutchyshen and Kate Beirness met Fresh Air Experience to try some kayaking.

Ron Horn with Fresh Air Experience said kayaking along the North Saskatchewan River is a great highlight in the city. He said there are some great opportunities for this sport in the city and immediate surrounding area.

“Our river is not that fast-flowing relative to some other cities and it’s very easily accessible. I mean the banks are low; you can put your boat in in many different places and pull it out and we’re really fortunate to have it,” Horn said.

Horn was contacted to help the TSN anchors crews hit the water. He said he was excited to take part.

“I think we have a good cause, I think we have a great city, we have a lot to showcase … I think we’re spoiled in a lot of ways. We have so much space and so much clean air and water that we just take it for granted,” he said.

It was just a leisurely paddle along the river for the two anchors. Dutchyshen and Beirness decided to make it interesting by racing near the shoreline.
“Oh, I just dominated,” Beirness said laughing.

From what she’s experienced, Beirness said the people are inviting.

“Saskatchewan is the best and I think it’s because of the people too. Every time we come to one of these small Sasky towns they just obviously treat Darren as one of their own, but they treat me the exact same way, so I think I just love meeting the people,” Beirness said.

The Prince Albert area isn’t new to Dutchyshen who grew up in Porcupine Plain.

“It’s fun man, the river is beautiful. I mean we didn’t do it for a while, but it’s just not to get out there and paddle,” he said.

“We always try to grab a little bit of the local flare, you know? A little bit of something that makes it unique and it’s pretty here on the banks.”

Kelly Flemming, brand manager at Kraft Foods, said the Tour has been fantastic so far. She feels the best part is getting to know the communities and the people.

“Consumers have welcomed our brands into their homes, we too felt like we needed to give back to communities across Canada. So really, being able to donate funding towards building better places to play in communities across Canada we think we’re helping to contribute to local sports and recreation,” Flemming said.

The TSN/Kraft Celebration tour will kick off Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Prince Albert Kinsmen Water Park with the live broadcast starting at 4 p.m.
