Duck Lake’s Neufeldt gets first shutout in Bears win over Gold Wings

Oct 5, 2019 | 3:10 PM

It didn’t take too long for Duck Lake’s Janae Neufeldt to pick up her first Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League shutout. In her first start with the Bears, Neufeldt made 21 saves in the Prince Albert Bears’ 5-0 win over the Weyburn Gold Wings Saturday afternoon at the Art Hauser Centre.

That’s not Neufeldt’s first SFMAAAHL win however, as she picked up a victory in three appearances last year with the Melville Prairie Fire.

Bears third-year forward Paris Oleksyn got her first multi-goal game in her Midget AAA career. After soaring down the wing and being stopped twice on a breakaway, Oleksyn scored a diving goal later on in the same shift to put the Bears up.

Oleksyn got her second early on in the second period, as her backhand deke beat Gold Wing goaltender Chloe Burt through the five-hole.

To end the second period, Kiara Stewart scored her first Midget AAA career goal. She won’t have to lie about how nice it was, because it was a highlight reel goal. Stewart faked a shot twice to freeze the defender, then went on her backhand and beat Burt on a low shot.

In the third, Jasper Desmarais scored, which is already her third goal of the season. Defender McKenzie Mayo also found the back of the net, after scoring the OT winner last Sunday in a 4-3 win over the Saskatoon Stars.

The Bears now have a regulation win and an overtime win in their first two contests. They’ll take on the Gold Wings again on Sunday, 1 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.
