Teachers secure contract gains at local level

Teachers with the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division (SRPSD) are welcoming new gains in three areas of their contract at the local level.

They will see increases regarding a bursary fund for their further education needs such as through university or other classes, as well as increased recognition for their efforts in extra-curricular activities.

Chair of the bargaining team Troy Parenteau said there will also be more teacher representation regarding professional development.

“We added an extra teacher to what we call the Professional Development committee, just to add some more teacher voice on how these funds are dispersed,” Parenteau told paNOW.

He noted the labour relationship with the employer on the local level was healthy, and ultimately with the new contract balancing the needs of teachers, students would reap the benefits.

“That goes into the classroom. Teachers feel rested, they feel more apt to deal with the business of the day, so the movement we made on this contract will certainly trickle down to the classroom,” he said.

In a media release Robert Bratvold, the Director of Education for the SRPSD, said the new five-year agreement represented the strong relationship between the division and teachers.

“During the negotiations our teams sometimes identified different priorities, but we discussed them openly and constructively to find the common ground. Together we found enhancements that help improve the working environment for teachers and the learning environment for students, while respecting the financial realities of the school division”

The larger contract issues of teachers salaries and benefits are negotiated at the provincial level.
