Banner year for Carlton boy’s soccer team

Jan 10, 2017 | 1:27 PM

They may not have won a medal at provincials last year, but Carlton’s senior boys’ soccer team is being recognized for their conduct on the field.

The team was presented Tuesday afternoon with the 3A Provincial Boys Soccer Tournament Sportsmanship banner. An incident at provincials might have won the team their award. A player from an opposing team missed a shot, then collapsed to the field in frustration. A member of the Carlton squad went over and helped the player back to their feet, encouraging him to play on.

Coach Mark Odnokon is very proud of his team.

“They are a very diverse group, but they have one thing in common and that’s soccer, and they are very passionate about it,” he said.

The boys come from a variety of different backgrounds, as seven different languages are spoken amongst the players.

Principal Dawn Kilmer said she was also very proud and thanked the parents in attendance for the work they did at home.
