Culture Days returns to P.A.

It’s going to be a big weekend for arts in Prince Albert with the annual Culture Days set to kick off on Friday.

“We have a lot of assets, a lot of artists and a lot of culture within our community,” P.A. arts and culture coordinator Judy Macleod-Campbell told paNOW. “I think it’s really important to celebrate that.”

The festivities in Prince Albert is part of a national celebration. Every year a Canada-wide theme is chosen, with this year’s being “creativity, the arts and well-being.”

Visitors to the Gateway Mall on Saturday will be invited to add notes on the theme and how it relates to their own life to a large heart sculpture. Artist Cheryl Ring will facilitate experience and the CommUNITY Heart will continue to be displayed at the mall after the weekend.

Another highlight of the weekend, the ever popular Tapestrama Festival will include a performance by the Filipino dance company Powerdance as part of their Canadian tour.

Nearby, the Mann Art Gallery will be allowing visitors inside their vault to see some of the 3,800 works stored there. Guests will also have the chance to see the gallery’s two current exhibitions: Wintercount and Other Freedom Songs and Axenet’I Tth’al.

The city of P.A. also runs a special program for schools on the Friday of Culture Days every year. In the past, teachers have been able to sign up their classes for workshops in various locations around the city. This year local artists will visit the schools themselves. Workshops on dancing, weaving, cultural sharing circles, cultural games and painting are all on offer.

All Culture Days events are free with transit throughout Prince Albert also being provided at no cost Friday-Sunday.

“The barriers are broken down to participate in these events, so that last one around transportation is provided as well,” Macleod-Campbell said.
