Crusaders close but Walter Murray ruins the fun

Sep 26, 2019 | 9:38 PM

The Carlton Crusaders senior football team were close to picking up their first win of the season, but the Walter Murray Marauders had other ideas.

The Marauders scored 20-consecutive points at the midway point of the game to win 34-27 on the second of a high school football doubleheader on Max Clunie Field Thursday.

The Crusaders opened the scoring with a five-yard touchdown by Austin Belair four minutes into the contest. Walter Murray rallied at the end of the opening quarter, scoring at the end of the quarter, recovering an onside kick, and marching into the end zone at the start of the second quarter to take a 14-7 lead.

Justin Adamko tied it up for the Crusaders after running one in on a misdirection play. Tarynce Russin scored on a 27-yard pass into the corner of the endzone from quarterback Ryan Adamko with 3:21 remaining in the second quarter. A missed point-after gave the Crusaders a 20-14 lead.

The Marauders regained the lead after a bad Crusaders’ snap and Marauder recovery gave them the ball on the one-yard line. They punched it in the next play to have a narrow 21-20 lead at the half.

They continued their scoring run by adding a touchdown in the third from Reid Janzen and one to begin the fourth on a misdirection run from offensive lineman Michael Bailey to lead 34-20 with 9:15 left in the fourth quarter.

Mason Harris of the Crusaders made it interesting with 3:22 left, as he scored on a five-yard touchdown score, after being set up from a long completion by Tarynce Russin to get them in the red zone.

The Crusaders had the ball with under two minutes left, but Marauders’ defensive back Noah Klitch picked it off and allowed his team to eat the clock and ice the game.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Crusaders offensive lineman Tyler Clarke suffered an injury after a pileup on a running play. Clarke was attended to by paramedics and taken on a stretcher into an ambulance.

The Crusaders will play E.D. Feehan on home turf on Oct. 3 for their next game.
