Marauders kick off football doubleheader with win over Mount Royal

In a rare senior high school football doubleheader at Max Clunie Field, the St. Mary Marauders kicked it off with a decisive 34-0 victory over the Mount Royal Mustangs (1-2). The Marauders picked up their first victory over the season, improving their record to 1-3.

“This night’s awesome. To get two rounds of high school football out here, it’s a ton of fun. I’ll be honest, I’m glad we’re not the second team on this field right now. It’s a little chewed up,” chuckled Marauders head coach Curt Hundeby. “But it’s nice to get a win under our belts, to play some tough football, to play four quarters, and to spread the ball around.”

Five different Marauders scored rushing touchdowns throughout the game.

The Marauders broke the deadlock with a left sweep from Marauders tailback Aiden Edwards for a 25-yard score. Bauer Swystun doubled the Marauders lead shortly after, by diving past the goal line on a six-yard rush to put the Marauders up 14-0 at the half.

The Marauders added to it late in the third quarter, when Gavin Johns sprung loose from 13 yards out to extend their lead to 20-0.

Carter McDougall then knifed in from two yards out for a 27-0 Marauders lead to start the fourth quarter. Seth LeMoal finished off the game with a six-yard touchdown run with 1:52 left in the game.

“It makes it hard to defend, that’s number one. Hopefully, it allows the whole offence to run like it should,” Hundeby said. “It’s not about doing things to get one guy open or one guy in the end zone, it’s about systematically moving down the field and finding the openings.”

Hundeby was happy with his defence in keeping the Mustangs off the board, and said they did a much better job at stopping the run than in weeks past.

The Marauders will have a tough task on their hands, as they will travel next Friday to Saskatoon to face the undefeated Holy Cross Crusaders (3-0).

The Carlton Crusaders are playing the second half of the doubleheader, taking on the Walter Murray Marauders.
