‘This cannot continue’: judge jails shoplifter for numerous offences

Sep 26, 2019 | 5:01 PM

A judge has handed a local woman jail time for stealing several items, including children’s clothing from Prince Albert businesses.

Amber Cook, 30, received a 90-day jail sentence Thursday morning after she pleaded guilty to three separate incidents over the last year.

Court heard Cook stole various items from cat food, to children’s clothing (she does not have children) and $82 worth of items from Gateway Mall’s Dollarama.

In the most recent incident last week, Cook was found to be carrying a small pocket knife. A mall security officer took her to the ground to stop her from fleeing.

Cook has 10 prior theft-related convictions on her criminal record and relied on stealing to help feed her addiction, court heard.

Judge Thomas Healey told Cook he was concerned about her record, and encouraged her to take the steps to turn her life around.

“This cannot continue,” he said.

In addition to Cook’s jail sentence, she received a 12-month probation order which includes participation in a stoplift program, counselling, and abstaining from alcohol or drugs.

Cook was given credit for 12 days spent in remand.
