Police car involved in rollover on Highway 3 during pursuit

Dency Herman appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court Friday where he was charged with an additional ten counts to the ones for which he was already wanted. These include dangerous operation of a motor vehicle endangering the public and assault of a police officer.

A suspected vehicle theft in the 1300 Block of Seventh St. E. late Wednesday quickly turned into a harrowing car chase that ended with a Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) vehicle being rammed and rolling into a ditch on Highway 3.

After reports of a vehicle theft in progress around 6 p.m., officers located and attempted to pull over the suspected stolen vehicle. After the attempted traffic stop, the driver sped off and tried to ram several police vehicles.

PAPS pursued the suspect westbound on Highway 3. While on the highway the suspect’s vehicle rammed a police car, causing it to roll.

“It was a collision between the suspect and police vehicle, that’s how the pursuit came to an end,” Police Chief Jon Bergen told paNOW. and [police

Parkland Ambulance treated the officer on scene. The officer was transferred to hospital for his injuries but was later released.

The suspect, a 25-year-old man was arrested on scene.

He faces several outstanding warrants including failing to stop for police, dangerous operations of a motor vehicle and possession of stolen property over $5,000. He will make his first court appearance on Friday morning on charges related to Wednesday’s incident.

Bergen said it was always a difficult decision on whether to pursue a suspect or give up the chase and try to apprehend them later.

” There are supervisors who have to be tuned in and are making those difficult decisions … it’s fluid and ongoing.’

Bergen acknowledged the speeds involved were excessive but labelled the incident a “dangerous event.”

“The pursuit was in and out of multiple lanes, off and on the road, and just a dangerous event,” he said. “Of course the speed was higher than is lawful but the manner of driving was what made it such a dangerous situation as well.”

Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a second man believed to be involved in the initial vehicle theft. They are asking homeowners in the area who have information or video surveillance to contact the Prince Albert Police Service or Crime Stoppers.

Bergen sent out a tweet Wednesday night reflecting on the incident and commending his officer’s reaction in the dangerous situation.
