Prep and Maintenance

Early maintenance on furnace recommended

Whether or not you decide to flip the switch early or wait till the mercury drops a little more, it’s not too early to consider some prep work on your furnace, according to SaskEnergy.

“It’s early, the equipment is not running too often, now is a great time to call your SaskEnergy network member and book them in to come to do a home heating tune up,” Casey McLeod, media relations with SaskEnergy. “It involves a hands-on examination and maintenance of your furnace and heating equipment, making sure that everything is running properly.”

McLeod encouraged homeowners to consider switching to a high-efficiency furnace to save money and energy.

She recommended furnace filters be changed every one to two months, and Crown Cleaners President Brent MacDonald agrees.

“We normally recommend every 30 days or so, on getting your furnace filter replaced. That gives good airflow. Any restriction of airflow, you’re just wasting energy,” MacDonald told paNOW.

MacDonald said this time of year they’re mainly concerned with dust build up.

“The biggest part of the furnace cleaning is all the dust in all the cold air returns, so when you turn your furnace on, it has a burning smell, and that’s just dust settling on the heat exchanger,” MacDonald explained.

He noted not to worry if the smell goes away rather quickly.

He said a regularly changed filter that is consistently dirty and plugged is a good indication, it’s time for your furnace and duct work to be cleaned.
