From drab to glam; water park building gets makeover

People passing Kinsman Water Park on Tuesday paused to take in a colourful new addition, with some motorists even rolling down their windows to shout their approval.

“I’m getting nothing but positive compliments,” artist Jayde Goodon told paNOW. “And the people across the street have been there for 50 years and they said that they love it.”

Goodon has been spray painting the art work on the west side of the Kinsman Water Park building since Monday.

While he submitted a sketch of his idea to the city beforehand, he’s been painting the wall freehand.

“If I feel like something should be going somewhere, I’ll brighten some spots up. I’m just kind of winging it as I go,” he said.

He said the woman, whose black and white profile is the focal point of the mural, is no one in particular, but women’s faces have always figured prominently in his art.

This piece, which was paid for by a $5,000 grant from the city of Prince Albert, also incorporates elements of water, as requested by the city, as well as other signature aspects of his own style. Goodon works as a tattoo artist in Saskatoon and has painted street art across Western Canada.

“This is pretty much what I like doing: more lines, flowers, women’s faces – not so much colour with tattoos – but when I paint walls this is where it gets really bright,” he said.

He added he hopes kids who see his art are inspired to “try something similar.”

Goodon’s mural is part of a seven-year plan to brighten the streets of P.A. with more public artwork.

P.A. Arts and Cultural Coordinator, Judy MacLeod-Campbell, said the idea for this specific piece came out of consultations with the community as part of the 2017 Kinsman Park renovation.

“One of the things that came up was public art and having backdrops because it’s such a beautiful setting for pictures, whether it’s grad or a wedding or whatnot,” she said.
