Kosior leads way in Green and White game

Sep 2, 2019 | 5:10 PM

Training camp came to a close on Monday afternoon for the Prince Albert Raiders, as the team held its annual Green and White game at the Art Hauser Centre.

Putting a final ribbon on a strong training camp performance was defenceman Landon Kosior who led all skaters with two goals and an assist helping Green to a 6-3 victory.

Kosior is coming off an impressive season with the Tisdale Trojans of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League in which he produced 52 points in 44 games from the blueline, earning team MVP honours. Furthermore, Kosior was the inaugural recipient of the Adam Herold Memorial Award, named after the former Raider who lost his life in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. Fittingly, Kosior and Herold were defence partners in bantam with the Balgonie Prairie Storm.

“[Last season] was a great year, I had great teammates all around me all year. It was great to get some individual awards, but the biggest award was the Western Regional championship, and that really helped me for Raider camp here,” Kosior said.

While the Trojans fell in the second round of playoffs to the Saskatoon Blazers, they served as host for the Telus Cup West Regional tournament which gave them an opportunity to advance to the national championship.

The Trojans punched their ticket in dramatic fashion with a 6-5 overtime victory in the regional championship over Thunder Bay. Unfortunately, their quest for a national title fell short, but the Trojans still came home with some hardware after defeating the Calgary Buffaloes 3-2 in the Telus Cup bronze medal game.

“It was an amazing experience. The fans in Tisdale are like no other, it was awesome to get that send off [with fans lining the streets as the team left for nationals]. It didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but we still came home with a bronze and that’s great at the end of the day.”

Now entering his 17-year-old season, the Regina native is looking to move on from the midget ranks, with his first step being training camp here in Prince Albert.

Kosior acknowledged the recent history of the team as an appealing factor, with last year’s championship as well as some prominent defencemen like Josh Morrissey moving on to the professional ranks in recent years. Furthermore, he said it would be exciting to have an opportunity to play alongside some talented young defencemen like Kaiden Guhle and Nolan Allan for the next couple years.

While Guhle and Allan were both chosen within the first three picks of their respective bantam drafts, Kosior has taken a different path after initially going unselected by WHL teams. Two years of midget later, it looks as if he’s ready for the next step.

With training camp now in the books, the Raiders will now begin their pre-season schedule on Wednesday night at the Art Hauser Centre when they face the Moose Jaw Warriors at 7 p.m.
