Couples pack floor for Polka Fest

The Prince Albert Polka Fest continued Saturday at exhibition grounds.

The dance floor was packed this afternoon with couples moving with grace and tempo to the music. A rendition of Cotton Eye Joe ended up bring a number of people onto the dance floor.

One of the couples, Lawrence Baker and his wife Iris, made the trip from Camrose Alberta. The couple originally met at the now defunct Polka festival in Camrose. Lawrence had good things to say about the local edition.

“The polka fests are sort of dying in Alberta and Saskatchewan, so it’s good here to come and really enjoy ourselves and the bands; they’ve got very good bands here at all times,” he said.

The dancing duo travel all over to take in Polka and other music festivals, including heading down to Las Vegas every February. Lawrence added that compared to other events he has attended P.A. stacks up well on a number of fronts including the facilities.

“They sure keep this floor in top shape for dancing,” he said.

Louise Turner was at the festival with her husband Ken. The Turners, who live in P.A., travel around to other festivals, including Watrous, which Louise ranks highly. But she said the Polka festival in P.A. stands out above others because of the strong musical performers and the facilities.

However, Turner said the music is not the only draw for them.

“We’ve made so many friends just from dancing at these things and then we see them regularly now at the Polka Fest, it’s great,” she said.

The fun, festivities and friendship will keep swinging along until Sunday afternoon.
