Brown in her ‘happy place’ once again, winning third straight Ladies Lobstick

When Kim Brown was growing up, she was either playing on her hometown Cooke Municipal Golf Course, or was heading up to Waskesiu for a quick 18.

Although she lives in Saskatoon now, Brown seems to find that magic whenever she returns to the area’s golf courses.

Brown won the 2019 Ladies Lobstick in Waskesiu, making that her third straight championship and her fourth since 2015. She also has a run of four straight Ladies Northern titles at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course, having won previously this year.

“There’s something about both golf courses that I feel comfortable on them,” Brown said. “Somehow when I come up to play, I end up playing well. I think it’s a really happy place for me, in both places, and I enjoy every minute of it.”

But Brown had a tough match to close out this year’s lobstick, as she outlasted Saskatoon’s Kathy Ziglo on 17 holes. Ziglo is no slouch, as she won this year’s Saskatchewan women’s amateurs, and is always in the hunt for the title at the Lobstick.

Brown had a three-hole lead over Ziglo heading into the back-nine but Ziglo was able to stabilize and make the game close before eventually running out of holes on the 17^th.

“There was a little opening for me on 11 and 12 and I got a couple holes back, but I just wasn’t crisp enough today,” Ziglo said. “I’ve played Kim enough to know I have to get pars, I have to get birdies, but I had too many bogies today. Anytime I’d pull myself back, I’d do something silly to not get myself back in it.”

When Ziglo got to within one after 12, Brown started to feel the heat but was able to refocus and play solid par golf to keep Ziglo at bay.

“It’s a little uncomfortable, you think you have a couple holes there but Kathy’s the type of competitor you can’t let up for a second, because she can come at you pretty strong,” Brown said. “She’s a good player, so I was trying to stay steady and keep making some pars and hitting some good shots. It was good.”
