P.A. Outlaws hosting roller derby event in St. Louis

With helmets on heads, knee and elbow pads in place, and quad roller-skates strapped on, the Prince Albert Outlaws are ready to host their inaugural roller derby tournament.

Saturday, Aug. 17 the P.A. club is hosting two teams at the St. Louis arena at 1:30 p.m. for a Star-Wars influenced Skate Wars: The Phantom Jammer roller derby event.

“The best way to see what’s all involved is to come check us out,” Board member and member of the Prince Albert Outlaws, Sandy Elsaesser, said. “It’s going to be a really great afternoon of roller derby.”

Elsaesser told paNOW the one-day event is family-friendly and will also feature two food trucks.

“It’s a full contact sport… and it involves teams of five players from each team on the track at a time, skating around the track, (with) one of the players the designated point scorer, they’re called the ‘jammer,’” Elsaesser said. “Their job is to get through blockers and come around the track and lap the blockers again. For every blocker they pass in a lap, they get a point.”

She encouraged anyone who is curious about the sport to attend and to get in touch with the club if they are interested in trying it out.

The club’s season runs from February until the end of November. Prospective players can join anytime during the season.
