Anglers encouraged to report catches in National Park survey

Prince Albert National Park is asking anglers to help them out.

Since May a creel survey has been underway, where people have been asked to report what kind of fish they catch and where they caught them.

Dustin Guedo, a park ecologist, explained the information they gather from the survey will help them to make some important decisions in the future.

“It allows us to look at our fishing regulations and helps us determine, do we keep things where they are, do we look at the catch numbers,” he said.

The survey has been going since May and will continue until September. Guedo was not able to provide specific number in terms of how many people have taken part in the survey so far, but he said the project has received support.

“People have been great so far in wanting to participate. It’s been a good turnout and we’re hoping that people will continue to report their catch,” he said.

Those who are interested in taking part in the survey can do so by reporting directly to staff at Kingsmere Lake and Hanging Hearts Lake. People can also report their catches at the visitors’ centre.

The last survey of this kind was done in 2010. Guedo said once the survey wraps up, parks staff will work to compile the information gathered and are looking to make it available early next year.
