Prince Albert Ex marks a successful year

The 2019 Prince Albert Exhibition exceeded expectations.

Heading into this year’s fair, organizers hoped to have around 30,000 people come through the gates. But according to P.A. Exhibitions President Robbie Ross they ended up doing much better.

“We ended up at 39,852,” he said.

Last year the exhibition saw nearly 20,000 people come out. Looking at why this year saw such strong numbers in comparison, Ross credits the return of live entertainment along with the weather.

“Usually when there’s rain, attendance is way down,” he said.

In terms of the livestock shows, Ross they saw over 200 entries in the beef show and were happy with how that portion went overall. He added they would like to see these numbers grow in the coming years at get back to where they were in the 1980s, where there were around 400 entries.

Ross said they are already looking forward to next year’s fair. Specifically Ross has plans to meet with potential corporate sponsors, who have expressed an interest in supporting the live entertainment events. If they are able to get this support, the exhibition will no longer have to charge admission to those venues.

“Fingers crossed it’ll happen,” he said.

Along with these changes, Ross said they are hoping to attract more volunteers to help run the exhibition. According to Ross, the current crop of volunteers is getting smaller and aging at the same time. He added to put on events they are dependent on people volunteering.

“We don’t have the income to pay a large staff,” he said.

Another change which Ross heard good things about was having less food trucks on site. He said they are likely to continue with the lower numbers as the vendors who came out reported doing quite well.

“Their biggest complaint before was they didn’t make any money,” Ross said.
