Royals, Padres fighting for Tier 1 provincial spot as final games of season loom

Jul 16, 2026 | 12:09 PM

Both of Prince Albert’s teams in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League’s (SPBL) U18 AA division are entering the final weekend of play ahead of provincials next weekend.

The Royals and the Padres are both batting for a provincial spot, where the top eight teams in U18 AA will go to Tier 1 provincials in Regina from July 24-26, while the remaining seven teams will drop down into the Tier 2 tournament that same weekend in Moose Jaw.

The Unity Cardinals have already been confirmed as the lone out-of-league participant to fill the void as the eighth team.

For both P.A. squad, it all comes down to this weekend. While the Royals are currently in a Tier 1 spot at 14-11-1 (W-L-T), a pair of losses in their final two games will push them into ninth and into the #1 seed for the Tier 2 provincial tournament. Meanwhile, the Padres will have to win their last two games of the season to move into a Tier 1 provincial spot as they currently sit ninth in league standings at 12-13-1.

Coincidentally, the final two games for both team will be against one another in an all Prince Albert doubleheader at Andy Zwack Field on Saturday. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m., while the second game takes place at 4 p.m.

The Royals come into the weekend having dropped both games of their doubleheader against the Sask Five Giants in Martensville on Wednesday, after they took down the East Central Red Sox on Monday, 22-6.

“We scored eight runs in both games, and you shouldn’t lose a game when you score eight runs,” said Royals head coach Troy Semenchuk. “We’ve got to clean up the defence, and it’s frustrating for the guys for sure. I know that those are a couple they wish they could have back, but the most important game is the next one.”

For the Padres, they’re coming off a tough stretch to begin July.

After starting the month with three straight wins, P.A. dropped their next six straight to fall drastically in the standings before getting back into the win column on Sunday with a 7-6 win over the Blue Jays in Regina. They then lost their most recent matchup against East Central, 6-5, on Tuesday in Marysburg.

The Padres are looking to keep their Tier 1 provincial hopes alive this weekend, while the Royals are looking to send them to the Tier 2 tournament in Moose Jaw.

Provincials happening this weekend

Other teams in Prince Albert Minor Baseball (PAMB) are taking to the fields this weekend in their respective provincial championship tournaments.

Games are scheduled to be played in various communities across Saskatchewan, including a pair of 11U Royals clubs. One will be off to North Battleford to compete at the AA Tier 1 championships while the other will be hosting the Tier 6 AA championships here in Prince Albert.

The U15 Royals will also be in action this weekend at the Tier 1 AA championship in Martensville, along with the Zone 8 Northern Jays out of Shellbrook.

Meanwhile, the U13’s will compete from July 24-26. Tom Hurd’s Royals team will be headed to Humboldt to compete in the AA Tier 1 championships as Curtis Bradbury’s team will host the AA Tier 4 tournament in PA.
