Braden Schneider will be back in the Big Apple this upcoming NHL season.

The Prince Albert-born defenceman signed a one-year contract worth $5.5 million on Monday to stay with the New York Rangers and avoid a salary arbitration hearing, as per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Schneider, 24, was drafted 19th overall by the Rangers in 2020 and has spent his entire career with the club, suiting up in 368 NHL games and netting 87 career points (20G-67A) thus far. He was set to be a restricted free agent but filed for arbitration on July 5 with the hearing scheduled for July 29, according to PuckPedia.

Schneider spent one full year in AAA playing for his hometown Prince Albert Mintos during the 2016-17 season. He finished second in league scoring that year among defencemen with 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points.

He then went on to the WHL with the Brandon Wheat Kings, eventually becoming captain while representing Canada on the international stage at the U17, U18, and U20 World Junior Championships. He also won gold with Canada at the 2021 World Hockey Championships.

Schneider and the Rangers will embark on the upcoming NHL season on Sept. 29, when New York travels to Boston to face the Bruins.
