Small community, Big heart

Shellbrook pours out support for fire crews and evacuees

Jun 1, 2026 | 4:43 PM

As the massive Lobstick wildfire continues to burn nearby, businesses and residents in both the town of Shellbrook and the neighbouring rural municipality (RM) have stepped up to help those in need.

About 130 people from the RM are staying with family and friends, while businesses and organizations in Shellbrook have offered what support they can.

The local Kinettes have been running the emergency evacuation registration centre out of the community hall and have also been organizing food for the fire crews and staff set up at the town office.

“Kinettes help because we want to. This is our community, and the people in it are very important to us,” the group said in a statement for paNOW. “It is an amazing thing to be a part of this group.”

Meals for volunteers have been available for pickup since Saturday morning, and the group has received cash donations from Parkside Derby, Back To Your Roots, TLM Financial, Shellbrook Royal Purple, Naber Ford and private donors.

Parkland Meats supplied the meat for a meal, and Shellbrook Bigway has been helping with supplies.

“The call for food donations has been so strong, we were blown away. We have grab-and-go items ready to send out between meals or with meals because of this wonderful community.”

Late Friday, Lake Country Co-op reopened its home centre so people could stock up on emergency supplies, including generators, pumps, hoses, water tanks, fuel cans, batteries, flashlights, masks and other essential items. Its C-store has also remained open as long as the community needs.

Amanda’s Pizza has been providing fire crews with free pizza and bagged lunches. Director Ron Weir said the restaurant will give crews whatever they need.

“We are a small community, and I think if we all take care of each other and all do our part, it’s just for the greater good.”

During Monday’s media briefing, Premier Scott Moe recognized the community’s efforts.

“It really is a special time when you see communities and individuals come together to support one another,” Scott Moe said.

Moe, who was in the community over the weekend, said RM Reeve Christine Strubbe, the town administrator and the RM administrator had been working from the RM office and making a strong effort to keep evacuees and other residents up to date.

Moe also acknowledged the Shellbrook and Buckland fire departments, describing them as capable and professional.

“You know, they did what they do each and every year, providing leadership and keeping homes safe. They have helped us not only in addressing the immediate threats, but also in preparing some of the communities for strategic threats that may or may not happen down the road.”
