The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) said it’s heightening measures to prevent contraband and other unauthorized items from entering its institutions, and it appears to be working.

On March 28 packages containing methamphetamine, THC concentrate, a lighter, rolling papers and smartphone accessories were seized, thanks in part to ‘the vigilance of staff members.’

The total estimated institutional value of the seizure is $139,100.

The CSC said it uses a number of tools to prevent drugs from entering the institutions.

“These tools include ion scanners and drug-detector dogs to search buildings, personal property, inmates, and visitors,” read a news release.

“CSC also works in partnership with the police to take action against those who attempt to introduce contraband into correctional institutions.”

A toll-free tip line has also been set up for federal institutions so it may receive additional information about activities relating to security like drug use or trafficking and other issues that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates, staff and members working at CSC facilities.

The CSC said the toll-free number, 1‑866‑780‑3784, helps ensure that the information shared is protected and that callers remain anonymous.

Earlier this month, almost $60,000 worth of contraband was seized at Saskatchewan Penitentiary
